German statutory pension claiming age is not one universal birthday. The available date depends on birth cohort, pension type, disability status, and qualifying periods. When a qualifying old-age pension starts early, the benefit is generally reduced by 0.3% for each early month; deferring after regular pension age generally adds 0.5% per month [1][2].

Why it matters

Claiming earlier gives more payment months but a lower amount for the duration of the pension. Deferring gives up near-term payments in exchange for a higher later amount. Employment income, health insurance, taxes, survivor benefits, and longevity can matter as much as the headline adjustment.

Worked adjustment examples

Assume an unreduced gross pension of €1,500 per month under a pension type that permits the stated timing:

  • 24 months early: 24 × 0.3% = 7.2% reduction, so €1,500 × 92.8% = €1,392 per month.
  • 12 months deferred after regular age: 12 × 0.5% = 6% increase, so €1,500 × 106% = €1,590 per month before any additional pension earned through later contributions.

The early reduction is generally permanent, not removed when regular pension age arrives [1]. The late example isolates the access-factor adjustment; continued insured work can add separate pension points.
