Employer pension contribution (Arbeitgeberzuschuss)
An Arbeitgeberzuschuss is money an employer adds to an occupational pension contribution. It increases the amount entering the plan without an equal reduction in the employee's stated contribution. “Free money” describes that immediate uplift, not a costless or universally optimal outcome: fees, reduced social-insurance earnings, vesting, tax, health charges, and access still matter [1][2].
Statutory supplement versus voluntary match
For specified salary-conversion routes, § 1a BetrAVG requires the employer to forward 15% of converted salary insofar as the employer saves social-insurance contributions. Collective agreements can contain different rules [1][2].
An employer may add more under a plan or collective agreement. That voluntary amount is not universal and can use a different matching formula, cap, waiting period, or vesting rule.
Worked contribution example
An employee converts €200 gross per month. The employer adds €30.
| Measure | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Amount entering plan | €200 + €30 | €230 |
| Immediate uplift on employee contribution | €30 ÷ €200 | 15% |
| Employee's out-of-pocket net cost | Depends on payroll deductions | Not €200 automatically |
Calling the uplift 15% is accurate. Calling it a guaranteed 15% investment return is not: the employee gives up salary, the benefit is locked, and later outcomes depend on the contract.
Break-even framework
Compare:
employer money + current tax/social relief
against:
fees + later tax/social charges + lower statutory accrual + inflexibility + alternative use of net pay
A stronger employer contribution can dominate weak product economics, but the threshold is household- and plan-specific. Evaluate only the matched contribution band separately from any unmatched amount.
