Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung)
Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung (BU, occupational disability insurance) is private income protection tied to the work a person actually performs. If illness or injury meets the contract's occupational-disability definition, the insurer pays the agreed monthly benefit. The policy definition, exclusions, benefit period, health disclosures, and claims evidence determine whether protection works in practice [1].
Why it matters
Future earnings are often a working household's largest economic asset. A long loss of work capacity can therefore create risk of ruin even when medical treatment is insured.
German statutory Erwerbsminderungsrente (reduced-earning-capacity pension) is different. It generally asks how many hours a person can work in the overall labour market, not whether the person can continue a specific profession. Full reduction generally means under three hours daily; partial reduction means three to under six hours. Insurance-history conditions also apply [2].
Worked protection-gap example
A household needs €2,600 net each month. One partner could still provide €1,100 and other reliable income is €400.
| Step | Monthly amount |
|---|---|
| Essential household need | €2,600 |
| Other reliable income | −€1,500 |
| Income-protection gap | €1,100 |
The €1,100 is a planning gap, not a product recommendation. Taxes, health-insurance status, inflation, existing statutory claims, and changes in household spending can alter it.
Contract questions that matter
| Question | Why it changes protection |
|---|---|
| How does the policy define the insured occupation? | Duties and working-time shares can affect the assessment |
| What degree and expected duration trigger benefits? | Many contracts use 50% and six months, but wording controls [1] |
| Can the insurer refer the claimant to another occupation? | Abstract-referral clauses can narrow protection |
| How long can benefits run? | A benefit ending well before retirement leaves another gap |
| Are increases available without new health checks? | Later income and inflation can outgrow a fixed benefit |
| Were health and occupation questions answered completely? | Incorrect disclosures can endanger the claim |
BU is not the same as accident insurance: illness causes many work-capacity losses, and accident cover uses a different insured event. It is also not the statutory Erwerbsminderungsrente.
