Credit payment protection insurance (Restschuldversicherung)
Restschuldversicherung is insurance linked to consumer credit that pays specified benefits after events such as death, incapacity, or unemployment. Coverage is contract-specific: exclusions, waiting and qualifying periods, benefit duration, and claim definitions can sharply narrow payment. Premium financing can also increase the balance and interest cost, so the loan and insurance require separate evaluation.
The 2026 decision frame
For consumer-loan agreements concluded after 1 January 2025, the policyholder may give the covered insurance declaration no earlier than one week after concluding the loan agreement [1][3][4].
Check:
- which event triggers payment and who receives it;
- exclusions for prior illness, employment status, contract termination, or waiting periods;
- benefit amount and maximum duration versus the loan schedule;
- total premium, commission, and any interest charged on a financed premium;
- overlap with employer, social, life, disability, or emergency-fund protection;
- whether loan approval or pricing actually depends on the policy.
Worked example
A €20,000 loan carries a €2,000 single-premium policy financed into the credit. Before interest, the financed balance becomes €22,000. The policy pays at most 12 instalments after a qualifying unemployment event and excludes some contract endings.
The relevant comparison is not “insured versus uninsured.” It is covered events and net benefits versus the full premium, added interest, exclusions, existing protection, and seller incentive.
