Pension waiting and qualifying period (Wartezeit)

Level 2 · FoundationsDE · 2026 figures
German termWartezeit (5 Jahre)

A Wartezeit (qualifying period) is the minimum set of pension-law periods required for a particular German statutory pension entitlement. The allgemeine Wartezeit (general qualifying period) is five years, normally 60 qualifying calendar months. It is an eligibility gate: satisfying it can open a claim, but does not make the resulting pension large or sufficient.

Why it matters

People often translate “five years” into five uninterrupted years of German employment. That is too narrow. Depending on the pension type, contribution periods, credited periods, child-rearing periods, periods aggregated under EU or treaty coordination, and other statutory periods may count differently. Other pensions use longer qualifying periods such as 35 or 45 years [1][2].

Worked example

Assume a pension record contains 48 qualifying calendar months from employment and 12 valid voluntary-contribution months. For the general five-year Wartezeit, the simplified count is 48 + 12 = 60 months, so the threshold is met.

The example does not establish eligibility for every pension type. A 35-year or 45-year old-age pension has different counting rules, and Erwerbsminderungsrente (reduced-earning-capacity pension) normally adds recent compulsory-contribution tests.

Which pension type? The applicable Wartezeit and extra conditions
Which months count?Whether the legal threshold is met
Which countries were involved?Whether EU or treaty coordination adds periods for eligibility
How many pension points exist?Benefit amount, a separate calculation

For 2026 planning, use the Versicherungsverlauf (insurance record) and a current DRV account clarification. A missing month can be a reporting problem rather than a genuinely absent period.
